Diplomacia intercultural mediterránea de la Monarquía hispana (DIPLOINMED)

This project reinterprets the Spanish Monarchy’s presence in the 16th-17th century Mediterranean, moving beyond traditional narratives of military expansion and rivalry with the Ottoman Empire and Maghreb states. Instead, it examines the indispensable role of negotiation and consensus-building with local authorities. Through a diplomatic history lens, the study challenges conventional foreign policy concepts, proposing a model of indirect and intercultural diplomacy. It explores diverse agents—royal envoys, friars, Orthodox leaders, merchants, and Moriscos—who shaped Hispano-Islamic political communication, offering new insights into global diplomacy's complexities in the Mediterranean world.
