Belén Vicens

Dr. Belen Vicens is an Associate Professor of History at Salisbury University, Maryland. She is a historian of law and society in medieval Iberia and the Mediterranean world, with an emphasis on relations between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. She is currently working on a book manuscript titled Negotiating Power and Privilege: Law, Monarchy, and the Nobility in Medieval Aragon and an article that examines the fortunes of a set of properties in the aftermath of the Aragonese conquest of Valencia of 1238 and the elite tenants’ relationships with the Crown. She coedited Interfaith Relationships and Perceptions of the Other in the Medieval Mediterranean: Essays in Memory of Olivia Remie Constable (Palgrave, 2021), and published “Swearing by God: Muslim Oath-Taking in Late Medieval and Early Modern Christian Iberia” (Medieval Encounters, 2014), which won ASPHS’ 2015 Best First Article prize. She cofounded Premodern Iberianists of the Mid-Atlantic Association (PIMA) in 2019, served in the Executive Council of the American Academy of Research Historians of Medieval Spain (ARHMS) from 2019 to 2022, and is currently a board member of the Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies (ASPHS).
